The anti-LGBT zones remain firmly established across the country, with an attempt made by the EU to refuse funding under the twinning programme to 6 cities enforcing the anti-LGBT sentiment. While the funding is not going to come from the EU, it is going to come from within the government’s Justice Fund as promised by Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro. An equivalent of just over £50,000 of government funding is being used as a statement: they will not back down. Their priority is unwavering, as they continue to support and propel the bigotry of its citizens.
Presently there has been a greater emphasis on the representation of the LGBTQIA+ community across the entertainment industry. The increasing visibility has led to an increased acceptance and tolerance in society and it has helped those in the community seek comfort as they see themselves represented on screen.

JK Rowling’s transphobic comments contrast starkly with the moral of the story which made her famous. Despite claiming to have researched the transgender movement thoroughly, Rowling’s 3600 word delivery of her views fundamentally misunderstands many facets of trans thought. From the dirty furore that ensued, old questions about how to reconcile creative appreciation with immoral creators arose.
Most people are aware of the danger the LGBTQIA+ community faces in Russia, the recent ban on trans people serving in the US military forces, or the transphobic discourse currently overtaking twitter – but there is nary a mention of the ticking time bomb that is the introduction of Poland’s ‘LGBTQIA+ ideology’ free zones. It is time to change that.
I write this as an open letter to myself to look back on and see the journey that I’ve taken; reflect on how much I have changed as a person and use this platform to speak my truth and advocate for those who feel silenced. I hope this may help the people I know understand me more and also bring comfort to those reading who may be facing similar problems.
